Active Ingredient: Alpha Keto Analogues
Therapeutic Class: Nitrogen-Free Amino Acid Precursors
Mechanism of Action:
They provide essential amino acids without adding extra nitrogen to the body. Through a process called “transamination,” these ketoanalogues take up excess nitrogen (in the form of ammonia) already present in the blood and convert themselves into functional amino acids. This effectively lowers Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) levels and reduces the workload on the kidneys.
Indications:
Alpha Keto Analogues are indicated for the following:

1. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Management: Prevention and treatment of damages due to faulty or deficient protein metabolism in patients with Stage 3, 4, or 5 CKD (Pre-dialysis).
2. Nutritional Support in Renal Insufficiency: Used in combination with a Very Low Protein Diet (VLPD) to maintain nutritional status while slowing the progression of renal failure.
3. Uremia Control: Reduction of uremic symptoms (nausea, vomiting, fatigue) by minimizing the accumulation of nitrogenous waste products in the bloodstream.

Critical Safety Information

• Dietary Compliance: This medication is only effective when used in strict conjunction with a protein-restricted diet (usually < 40g/day for adults).
• Hypercalcemia Risk: Because many ketoanalogues are formulated as calcium salts, they can cause high blood calcium levels. Regular monitoring of serum calcium is mandatory.
• Vitamin D Interaction: Caution should be exercised if taken with Vitamin D or other calcium-containing products, as this increases the risk of hypercalcemia.
• Administration: Tablets should be taken with meals to facilitate proper absorption and utilization of the amino acids during protein metabolism. Do not crush or chew the tablets.
