Description
Active Ingredient & Strength: Calcium acetate 667mg
Therapeutic Class: Phosphate Binder
Mechanism of Action:
Calcium Acetate works in the gastrointestinal tract to bind to dietary phosphorus from food. It forms an insoluble calcium-phosphate complex that is then eliminated through the feces instead of being absorbed into the bloodstream.
Indications:
Calcium Acetate 667mg is primarily indicated for:
- Hyperphosphatemia Management: Reduction of elevated serum phosphorus levels in adult and pediatric patients (aged 6 years and older) with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) who are on dialysis.
- Secondary Hyperparathyroidism Prevention: Prevention of complications related to high phosphate, such as ectopic calcification and bone disease (renal osteodystrophy), in patients with kidney failure.
- Calcium Supplementation (Secondary Use): Treatment of hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) in specific clinical contexts.
Critical Safety Information:
- Contraindications: Must not be used in patients with hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels).
- Administration: Must be taken with meals to be effective; it will not work on an empty stomach.
- Monitoring: Regular blood tests are required to monitor both serum phosphorus and calcium levels, as excessive use can lead to hypercalcemia, which may cause symptoms ranging from nausea and confusion to serious heart rhythm issues.
- Drug Interactions: Can decrease the absorption of certain antibiotics (e.g., fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines) and other medications like levothyroxine. These should typically be taken at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after calcium acetate.
