Description
Active Ingredient & Strength: Celadrin 500mg + Glucosamine 500mg
Therapeutic Class: Nutritional Supplement / Joint Health Agent / Anti-inflammatory.
Mechanism of Action:
- Celadrin: A patented complex of cetylated fatty acids (CFAs) that works by lubricating cell membranes throughout the body, enhancing cell membrane fluidity, and repelling inflammatory chemicals. It decreases the production of inflammatory mediators (like certain interleukins and prostaglandins) and provides a protective barrier against further damage.
- Glucosamine: An amino sugar that serves as a building block for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans, which are essential components of articular cartilage and synovial fluid. It helps maintain the strength and resilience of cartilage and may help in its regeneration, while also having mild anti-inflammatory effects.
- Synergistic Effect: Together, these ingredients offer a dual action, with Celadrin providing rapid anti-inflammatory effects and lubrication, and Glucosamine assisting in the long-term rebuilding and maintenance of cartilage, potentially enhancing the efficiency of both components.
Clinical studies show:
- Patients taking Celadrin® for 30 days had ~10° improvement in knee flexion and ~7.8° in extension, with faster stair climbing and chair rise compared to placebo. Hesslink et al., 2002 (J Rheumatol)
- Over 12 weeks, Celadrin® significantly reduced pain (VAS scores), improved physical function and stiffness, and increased distance walked in 6 minutes, while being well-tolerated. Udani et al., 2011
- Celadrin® was as effective as meloxicam (7.5 mg/day) for pain relief and functional improvement with fewer gastrointestinal side effects, hence a safer option. Mohebi et al., 2023
This combination helps maintain joint flexibility, reduce stiffness, and support daily activity safely and effectively.
Indications:
This combination is primarily indicated for the following uses:
- Osteoarthritis (OA) Management: Symptomatic relief of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee, including reducing pain and stiffness, and improving functional performance (e.g., ability to climb stairs, walk, and rise from a chair).
- Joint Function & Mobility: Supporting overall joint health, flexibility, and increasing the range of motion in various joints (knee, elbow, wrist, etc.).
- Inflammation and Pain Relief: Reduction of pain and inflammation in joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles associated with various inflammatory disorders, strains, bruises, and sprains.
- Cartilage Health: Aiding in maintaining and potentially rebuilding joint cartilage to prevent further tissue and joint damage.
Critical Safety Information
- Administration: Typically taken orally as a capsule or tablet, usually with meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
- Shellfish Allergy: Individuals with a shellfish allergy should be aware that glucosamine is often derived from the exoskeletons of crustaceans and should consult a healthcare provider.
- Diabetes: Patients with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance should monitor their blood glucose levels closely, as glucosamine might affect insulin sensitivity.
