Mechanism of Action:
A potent, non-purine selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for metabolizing purines into uric acid. By blocking this pathway, febuxostat decreases the production of uric acid in the body, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels.
Indications:
Febuxostat is indicated for the hyperuricemia associated with following conditions:

• Gout Management: Chronic management of hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid in the blood) in adult patients with gout. It is intended for long-term use, not for the immediate treatment of an acute gout flare-up.
• In certain clinical settings, it may also be used to prevent high uric acid levels in patients undergoing chemotherapy (Tumor Lysis Syndrome).

Drug Interactions:
Should not be used with certain drugs metabolized by xanthine oxidase, such as azathioprine or mercaptopurine, due to severely increased toxicity risk.
