Description
Active Ingredient: Calcium Carbonate 750 mg + Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) 400 IU
Therapeutic Class: Nutritional Supplement
Mechanism of Action:
- Calcium Carbonate: A source of elemental calcium required for building and maintaining bone matrix, conducting nerve impulses, and supporting muscle contraction. While it acts as a gastric antacid, it requires stomach acid for optimal dissolution; therefore, it is best absorbed when taken with food.
- Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol): This biologically active form of Vitamin D, essential for the active transport of calcium across the intestinal lining into the bloodstream. It ensures the body can effectively utilize the calcium provided, rather than it being excreted.
Indications:
- Osteoporosis Management: Used as an adjunct to standard therapy to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis) and weaken bones (osteomalacia/rickets), particularly in postmenopausal women and the elderly..
- Nutritional Support: Prevention and treatment of combined calcium and Vitamin D deficiencies caused by inadequate diet, malabsorption, or increased demand (e.g., pregnancy, lactation, or rapid growth).
- Bone Density Maintenance: Supports overall skeletal health and prevents the body from mobilizing calcium from the bones to the blood when dietary intake is low.
- Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Under strict supervision, sometimes used as a calcium-based phosphate binder in dialysis patients to manage hyperphosphatemia.
Critical Safety Information:
- Administration: Tablets should be taken with a meal to enhance calcium absorption and minimize gastrointestinal upset.
- Do Not Use If: You have hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), hypercalciuria (high urine calcium), or a history of severe kidney stones.
- Medical Supervision Required: Individuals with sarcoidosis, mild-to-moderate kidney disease, or those taking cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin) should consult a physician before use.
- Drug Interactions: This supplement can reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics (Tetracyclines, Quinolones), Bisphosphonates, and Levothyroxine. It is recommended to space these medications apart from your calcium dose.
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Although often indicated, use during pregnancy should only be under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
